Hi! Welcome to the second episode of Psalms for The End Times. Today, I’m going to be looking at Psalm 7. If you don’t know me, my name is Annette Bell, and I’m the host of Overcoming the Tribulation, which is mostly focused on preparing our hearts for the return of Christ. Psalm 7
Psalm 7. A shiggaion of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning Cush, a Benjamite. O LORD my God, I take refuge in You; save and deliver me from all who pursue me, or they will tear me like a lion and rip me to pieces with no one to rescue me. Oh LORD my God, if I have done this and there is guilt on my hands– if I have done evil to him who is at peace with me or without cause I have robbed my foe– then let my enemy pursue and overtake me; let him trample my life to the ground and make me sleep in the dust. Selah. Arise, O LORD, in Your anger; rise up against the rage of my enemies. Awake, my God; decree justice. Let the assembled peoples gather around You. Rule over them from on high; let the LORD judge the peoples. Judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness, according to my integrity, O Most High. O righteous God, Who searches minds and hearts, bring an end to the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure. My shield is God Most High, Who saves the upright in heart. God is a righteous judge, a God who expresses His wrath every day. If He does not relent, He will sharpen His sword; He will bend and string His bow. He has prepared His deadly weapons; He makes ready His flaming arrows. He who is pregnant with evil and conceives trouble gives birth to disillusionment. He who digs a hole and scoops it out falls into the pit he has made. The trouble he causes recoils on himself; his violence comes down on his own head. I will give thanks to the LORD because of His righteousness. I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.
Prayer for Deliverance from Enemies
In verses 1 and 2, David asked the Lord for deliverance from his enemies who are threatening his life. In verses 3 through 5, he says, if I’m guilt–if I’m guilty of the things my enemies think I’m guilty of– let them kill me. But he really knows that’s not the issue, and when he comes into verse 6, he says, “Arise, O LORD, in Your anger; rise up against the rage of my enemies. Awake, my God; decree justice.” Afterwards, this psalm turns to the end times, when the nations will assemble before the Lord, and God will ultimately answer David’s prayer for justice against his enemies.
According to My Righteousness
David asked God to judge him according to his righteousness and his integrity. It’s important to note that if we’re judged according to our self-righteousness, God will declare all of us guilty. The righteousness that he’s talking about that we can experience ourselves is the righteousness that comes by faith in the Son of God, because what we have in ourselves is not pleasing to Him.
An End to the Violence of the Wicked
David prays that God will make an end to the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure. He will–this will happen on the day that He returns. Amen.
A Shield to the Upright and a Righteous Judge
David notes that God is a shield to the upright and a righteous judge. Verses 12 through 16 describes what will happen to the wicked at Jesus’ return. He will sharpen His sword and the violence of the wicked will come down on their own heads.
Praise the LORD
Psalm 7 ends with praise. “I will give thanks to the LORD because of His righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.” Amen.
