Welcome to episode 3 of Psalms for Troubled Times. Today, I’m going to be looking at Psalm 5. If you don’t know me, my name is Annette Bell. Psalm 5
“For the director of music. For flutes. A psalm of David.
Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my saying. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you, I pray.
In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning, I lay my request before You and wait in expectation.
You are not a God who takes pleasure in evil; with You the wicked cannot dwell. The arrogant cannot stand in Your presence; You hate all who do wrong. You destroy those who tell lies; bloodthirsty and deceitful men the LORD abhors. But I, by your great mercy, will come into Your house; in reverence, I will bow down toward Your holy temple.
Lead me, O LORD, in Your righteousness because of my enemies–make straight your way before me. Not a word from their mouth can be trusted; their heart is filled with destruction. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongue they speak deceit. Declare them guilty, O God! Let their intrigues be their downfall. Banish them for their many sins, for they have rebelled against You.
But let all who take refuge in You be glad. Let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love Your name may rejoice in You. For surely, O LORD, You bless the righteous; You surround them with Your favor as with a shield.”
Cry for Help
David’s psalm begins with a petition for God to hear his cry for help. He says, “Give ear to my words,” “Consider my sighing,” “Listen to my cry.” David’s prayer reflects that he has a personal relationship with God. God isn’t some distant being, but actually intimately involved in his life. He says, “My God” and, “my King.”
Morning Prayers
Verse 3 reveals that David had a habit every morning of spending time with the LORD in prayer. And with this great start to his morning, it’s no wonder that he knew God intimately. And we can do the same thing as well.
You Hear
Psalm 5 is a prayer of faith. He talks about how “You hear my voice” and how he lays his requests before the Lord and waits in expectation–a person who prays and believes that God is able to act and that He cares.
But I, By Your Great Mercy
In the next few verses, David reminds God how He deals with the wicked. Yet he also thanks Him for the mercy He has extended towards him, because he knows he is not perfect either. And he needs the mercy of God in order to come into the presence of God. And so do we.
Lead Me in Your Righteousness
David petitions the LORD to lead him in the ways of righteousness, especially because of his enemies. He doesn’t want them to have any reason to mock the name of the LORD, because he falls short. David tells the LORD about how his enemies lie and they seek destruction. And he petitions the LORD that their intrigues would be their downfall.
Surrounded With Your Favor
Lastly, he speaks of the LORD as a refuge and a protection that those who love His name may rejoice in Him.
